Storyline Laughing Under the Clouds (2018):

In the dawn of the Meiji period, the Gokumonjou, an inescapable prison, has been established in the middle of an enormous lake to counter the soaring crime rates the new era has brought. Serving as the ferrymen are the famous Kumou brothers: the eccentric family head, Tenka; the reckless but noble second son, Soramaru; and the guileless youngest, Chuutarou. In spite of their grim work, the three lead relatively peaceful lives in the ever-cloudy town of Oumi, together with their housekeeper, Shirasu Kinjou. But buried in the long history of Oumi is the legend of the terrifying "Orochi," a serpentine beast that awakens every three hundred years in a human vessel. Unbeknownst to Soramaru and Chuutarou, the actual job of the Kumou family is to seal the Orochi away before it fully revives—or the world will be plunged into destruction. Amid the monster's next resurrection, the Kumou family must find the resolve to keep laughing under the clouds.

Laughing Under the Clouds (Japanese: 曇天に笑う, Hepburn: Donten ni Warau, also referred to as Cloudy Laugh) is a Japanese supernatural manga series by Karakara-Kemuri. It was serialized by Mag Garden on Monthly Comic Avarus magazine. It has been adapted into an anime television series.

Laughing under the clouds was almost close to the anime, but, overall, was interesting and entertaining. The special effects were really good and that helped with the enjoyment of the drama. The action scenes were really good as well and the costumes, although some of them were wierd, they were nice enough and close to the ones in the anime.

Unbeknownst to Soramaru and Chuutarou, the actual job of the Kumou family is to seal the Orochi away before it fully revives—or the world will be plunged into destruction. Amid the monster's next resurrection, the Kumou family must find the resolve to keep laughing under the clouds.

Laughing Under the Clouds is a watchable anime with a coherent enough plot, some character development, an ending, as well as average animation and sound. It just fails to be memorable in any way. Donten ni Warau (Laughing Under the Clouds) is a rare breed. I say this for its ability to tell a story guided by events of the past with a greater focus for the future. Taking place in the present time with a trio of brothers, they have the duty of ferrying convicted criminals as result of high levels of crime rate.
